Oops, I hadn't seen JCDerrick's reply or your subsequent posts, cinderbean, because I had my post window open for awhile while finding the links. Therefore, Hawaiians absolutely feel that it matters what they think. Īt this time it would behoove visitors to be extra polite, considerate, respectful, and to behave as GUESTS. When forced to work 2-3 jobs, commute for two hours, and still have to live in crowded conditions - do not expect gratitude. When a family can make it on a 40 hour week, that is one thing. So visitors can no longer expect people to be grateful to visitors for the dollars that support their family, because that "support" is an illusion. Many people in Hawai`i are looking to solutions other than tourism that will actually meet people's needs. Tourism used to sustain the islands, but the people of the islands are now in economic crisis, as cost of living and housing has risen to the point where wages paid by the tourism industry to the average worker does not provide a living. I do not think you can equate the Hawaiian situation with your home town tourism, unless your hometown has received a Presidential apology, has an active Sovereignty movement, or has a bill pending in Congress such as the Akaka Bill. "Is Hawai`i Really a State of the Union?" To become informed about the current Hawaiian argument for sovereignty, check out This apology fully admits that the overthrow was illegal and requires redress, and perhaps it should be distributed on the plane for visitors to read before they disembark.
HAWAII MAUI REVEALED FULL
I would urge you to read this page which has excerpts (and link to full text) of the formal apology to the Hawaiian people signed by President Clinton in 1993. The problem with your idea is that you don't take into account or perhaps do not know of the unique status of Hawai`i, which was a formally recognized sovereign nation that was illegally overthrown by the United States and illegally annexed. As for longing for the days of ancestors.that is certainly not exclusive to Hawaiians, is it? state, and we are all citizens.of the entire nation! Whether they mind or not is of no consequence, except to themselves. >Ummmmmmmmm.the last time I checked, all of Hawaii is the 50th U.S. And by visitors I mean all of us not native to the islands. I believe, personally, we owe them a bit of respect as visitors. I think the residents of Hawaii, especially the true Hawaiians have endured quite a bit over the last 150 years. I think it's unfair to both the residents AND the visitors. And that's the issue at hand with the Revealed series. Now I'm not saying I back any of the sovereignty groups, but I certainly wouldn't say it's of "no consequence, except to themselves." I think many people have a beef with the mainland mentality of "this is America and I have a RIGHT to explore it." A lot of visitors see it as one big national park. Throwing, "Well you're a state now" in their face isn't making it better. I can definitely understand the grudge many have with the government because of it.

While I was ignorant to it a long time, I believe the seizure of the Hawaiian kingdom was still wrong. "Whether they mind or not is of no consequence, except to themselves." What they believe is rooted in a mindset most mainlanders will never understand - trust me, I've seen it enough to know. Polynesian culture is A LOT different from what most mainlanders are accustomed to. I'm just stating that Hawai'i isn't the Euro-influenced mainland. I'm not arguing with you, I concur with *some* of your points.
